What Is Pilates?
The goals of Pilates are to obtain optimal muscle length along with functional activity stability, increase energy, and improve your mental and spiritual well-being.
Major principles of Pilates include:
- Breathing: inhaling into the small of your back fully exhaling
- Relaxation: every other muscle ‘relaxed, but ready’
- Concentration/focus: increase quality of movement and detail/imagery of exercise
- Control: several parts of body in ‘mindful movement simultaneously’
- Fluidity between exercises
- Energy/power from the ‘inside out/outside in’
- Strength and flexibility
- Posture: holding self habitually erect without strain
History of Pilates
Pilates was invented by Joseph H. Pilates during World War I when he was a resident at one of the many prison camps. At that time an influenza pandemic claimed 70 percent of the local population. Secondary to Joseph H. Pilates rigging different bands, springs, and straps from the prison camp beds (today’s Pilates Reformer machine) and designing a specific exercise program for the residents, his particular prison camp lost no one to the influenza pandemic. Years later, Joseph H. Pilates widely used his exercise equipment and program with boxers and dancers; coining, “circulation is what heals.”
