Great Moves has recently moved to our new location. This has been an exciting move for a lot of reasons, but one of the new things that we now offer is the Alter-G treadmill. This antigravity treadmill, developed from NASA technology, uses air pressure to “unweight” the body, allowing walking and running with lower impact on the joints and muscles. The Alter-G is ideal for anyone who would like to walk or run with less pain or who is recovering from surgery to the leg, such as total knee replacement. This space age treadmill can be used by everyone from marathon runners, professional athletes, recovering veterans, and those with arthritis, or recovering from a stroke.
Once a physical therapist has done an evaluation to determine whether this is an appropriate treatment for you, they can get you on the treadmill and you can walk or run anywhere from 100% of your weight to 20% of your weight. Along with other exercise, manual therapy, and education, the AlterG can help with decrease arthritis pain, improve balance, aid recovery from overuse injuries and help with back pain.
One of our physical therapists has volunteered to help show how this machine works.
First, there is a special pair of shorts that you need to put on in order to create an air tight seal.
Then, you place your arms over your chest to allow the machine to calibrate your weight.
Now you or your therapist can determine what percent of body weight to use for your workout, and then you’re ready to go!
