What Is The ‘Core?’

Home » Blog » What Is The ‘Core?’

Blog · February 18, 2020

It is very common these days to hear people talking about strengthening ‘the core?’ What is it? Why would we want to strengthen it? How do we strengthen it?

The core is the area of your trunk, and it is the foundation for all of your movement. Just like a house has to have a firm foundation in order for it to be stable, the body has to have a firm foundation in order to move well and decrease chances of injury with activity.

Your Core Muscle Groups

The core consists of four groups of muscles:

  • abdominals
  • back stabilizers
  • pelvic floor
  • diaphragm

Research shows that when a person has back pain, these muscles are often inhibited. Improving the strength of the core muscles can decrease back pain and decrease compressive forces through the spine. Not only that, but a strong core helps people to have stronger, more efficient movements through the rest of their body, including the hips, shoulders and neck.

Get with a Personal Trainer

There are many different exercises that can help with improving core strength. Your physical therapist can help you determine the exercises that are best for you. If you have any questions about what exercises would be best for you, call (719) 477-6870 to set up a free consultation with a personal trainer.
