It is very common these days to hear people talking about strengthening ‘the core?’ What is it? Why would we want to strengthen it? How do we strengthen it?
The core is the area of your trunk, and it is the foundation for all of your movement. Just like a house has to have a firm foundation in order for it to be stable, the body has to have a firm foundation in order to move well and decrease chances of injury with activity.
The core consists of four groups of muscles: the abdominals, the back stabilizers, the pelvic floor and the diaphragm. Research shows that when a person has back pain, these muscles are often inhibited. Improving the strength of the core muscles can decrease back pain and decrease compressive forces through the spine. Not only that, but a strong core helps people to have stronger, more efficient movements through the rest of their body, including the hips, shoulders and neck.
There are many different exercises that can help with improving core strength. Your physical therapist can help you determine the exercises that are best for you.
